Here’s what Shukri had to say.
When did you join the Career Ready Programme?
I joined in September 2018
What type of things did you do on the Career Ready Programme?
During the Career Ready Programme, I took part in Lambeth College’s Annual HE fairs, which usually happens in October. The event allows students like me to engage with other universities and prepare inquires that allow us to have a better understanding of the universities we want to study at.
Another Career Ready Programme is the Lambeth College Annual Work experience fair, which was also a unit in my health and social care course. This has allowed me to gain motivation and inspiration for my decision to study midwifery.
I also took part in college trips to museums and other universities that helped me to build my confidence and awareness on certain topics.
For the Career Ready Programme, I was enrolled in a math’s course that allowed me to take part in exams and weekly lessons.
What did you enjoy most about the Programme?
What I enjoyed the most about the Programme is the different ways they made me aware of what the universities had to offer and what I am capable of. I also enjoyed getting to know different people and communicating well with the staff of Lambeth College as well as people who have come to the college to speak to us about our future aspirations.
How did you get involved?
I applied to become a student ambassador and volunteered my time to support the students and staff of the college. I also got the opportunity to take part in college run activities like attending the campus of the university of Hertfordshire with the college to experience what attending the university would be like and meeting new people to help with our confidence and communication with new people.
How has it benefitted your studies?
It has benefitted my studies and me by allowing me to participate in activities like HE sessions, apprenticeship seminars, workshops and campaigns. This has all enabled me to carry knowledge and skills attained from this towards my future studies. Furthermore it has allowed me and assisted me to study my desired course that I am extremely passionate about as well as studying at a university that is suitable to my needs and that is of close proximity.
Being a student ambassador has also come with many benefits as it provided me with the opportunity to gain valuable customer service experience, representing the college as best as I could and being recognized as a role model and a leader.
Many of the things that I have learnt and adapted through my time at Lambeth College and the Career Ready Programme have been very motivational and inspiring and have allowed me to accumulate many skills that I am able to carry with me not only through my studies at university but through my personal development and journey in life.
