Last week, the new learners participating in the NHS Non-Clinical Sector Work Based Academy Program had the opportunity of meeting Tiyana Downie, a seasoned professional with five years' experience working in various administrative roles within the NHS. Tiyana is the Senior Administrator and Lead Induction for the Learning and Development team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
This program is a partnership between South Bank Colleges (SBC), the Department for Work and Pensions, King's College Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and London Mayor. The 20 learners enrolled in the Level 1 Preparing for Health Care Professions program will spend six weeks developing essential skills to secure an administrative position in one of the participating NHS Trusts. Tutors will guide them in honing their IT skills, expanding their administrative knowledge, and providing insights into the healthcare sector for both children and adults. Additionally, personalised advice and support will be given for employability and application processes.
The Entry to Employment department has arranged work experience days with King's College Hospital, and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, where learners can gain firsthand experience. The department also organises weekly visits from current NHS staff members who hold non-clinical administrative roles, allowing learners to learn more about working in a non-clinical position within the NHS. This provides an opportunity to ask questions regarding the application process, available administrative roles, salaries, apprenticeships, and development opportunities.
Tiyana's visit to the program left a lasting impact on the learners. She shared invaluable experiences and insights into the various roles she has undertaken at King's College Hospital, and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Learners were captivated by Tiyana's journey and eagerly sought her advice on navigating the application process, finding the right role within the NHS, considering potential salaries, and exploring opportunities for apprenticeships and development. Tiyana's visit served as a confidence boost for the learners, renewing their enthusiasm for their journey to secure a job in the NHS in the next six weeks.
Entry to Employment has also secured five additional SWAP positions in NHS Non-Clinical roles between January and July. These positions are open to all Universal Credit customers, providing more opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing non-clinical roles within the NHS.
Overall, the Level 1 Preparing for Health Care Professions program offers learners an opportunity to develop essential skills, gain practical experience, and receive personalised guidance and support for employability and application processes. The guidance and support from NHS professionals like Tiyana Downie, coupled with the availability of SWAP positions, creates a promising landscape for learners and Universal Credit customers to embark on successful careers in the NHS.
